As we approach “back to school” time and our thoughts turn to education, I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about some non-profit groups that are making a difference in the lives of Nevada’s students. Eye Care 4 Kids and Junior Achievement both deserve your support.
Students who can’t see very well often fall behind academically, and Eye Care 4 Kids (www.eyecare4kids.org) is giving them a chance to succeed. Nevada State Bank recently donated $25,000 to this non-profit group, which provided free eyeglasses to more than 1,500 low-income southern Nevada students last school year. Every child they treat has been pre-qualified by the school district as low-income, and they have given free glasses to hundreds of students who had never had vision care before, including nine who were diagnosed as being legally blind. They estimate that about 65,000 southern Nevada students need glasses but are unable to afford them.
Junior Achievement’s goal is to educate young people about free enterprise, business and economics. Nevada State Bank is proud to support JA, not only financially, but also by volunteering our colleagues to teach age-appropriate classroom lessons on everything from budgeting to the basics of running a business. Our colleagues volunteer in schools in both northern Nevada (www.renoja.org) and southern Nevada (www.jalasvegas.org) and participate in raising funds for their local chapters through activities like candy sales and bowl-a-thons. At Nevada State Bank, we realize the importance of educating our young people today to prepare them to become the business leaders of tomorrow.
Partnering with local elementary schools is also part of our community support. In Las Vegas, we have helped support Ruby Thomas Elementary School since 2001, and it’s a real delight for me to join other colleagues in reading to the children during Nevada Reading Week each spring. If you’re a business owner, I encourage you to contact your local school district to see how your company can pair up with a local school to help make your community a better place to live.
I’m grateful that Nevada has organizations like Eye Care 4 Kids, Junior Achievement and many other non-profits that support our state’s efforts to improve education. By helping our students, they’re creating a brighter future for all of us.
