President’s Letter: Supporting Nevada’s College Students and Graduates

June 20, 2012
Letter from Dallas Haun

In an uncertain economy, our state’s college students and recent graduates need all the support we can give them in developing their careers. Nevada State Bank is committed to provide this support on a variety of fronts. We offer a tuition reimbursement program to eligible employees, and we employ students in part-time jobs as they earn their degrees. An additional, key component in our effort has been our association with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, under the leadership of President Neal J. Smatresk.

Through the university, we recruit candidates to fill paid internships as well as regular fulltime positions. Our internship program is designed to offer students or new graduates an opportunity to gain real hands-on training and experience under professional guidance. Assignments can last anywhere from three to nine months, depending on a student’s availability and the bank’s needs, and can develop into fulltime career opportunities. Some of our interns have arranged to earn academic credit for their work. Currently, we have interns working in our credit administration, finance, and mortgage areas, as well as our corporate banking underwriter program. To extend the benefits of this program to a greater number of the state’s students, we recently initiated a similar relationship with the University of Nevada, Reno and just accepted our first three interns from UNR.

Nevada State Bank also works with UNLV to fill regular fulltime positions, drawing on the resources of the university’s career center or, depending on the bank’s needs, through more targeted cooperation with a specific academic department. On this aspect of our association, it has been my privilege to work with President Smatresk and observe his tireless dedication to the success of UNLV’s students. By sharing the same goal, we at Nevada State Bank bring together two of our core values:  giving back to the community and encouraging successful career paths through development. In our business, we use the slogan “the door to your future” to describe how we help our clients achieve their financial goals. The thought resonates equally well when it comes to supporting our state’s students and graduates as they prepare for and launch their careers.

Best Regards,
