President’s Letter June 14, 2011

Letter from Dallas Haun

I truly witnessed the positive power of parents and teachers in action on June 9th at Ruby Thomas  Elementary School in Las Vegas. Ruby Thomas is Nevada State Bank’s partner school; therefore, I had the honor of joining Mayor-elect Carolyn Goodman, Municipal Court Judge Cedric A. Kerns, and other speakers at the promotion ceremony for fifth graders of Ruby Thomas. Proud families packed the gym, and the students, dressed up to show the importance of the occasion, shone like stars. In keeping with the theme “Oh the Places We’ll Go,” the fifth graders sang songs that expressed their dreams for the future and their sadness at saying farewell to their school. Several students read essays they had written.

I saw tears in the eyes of a few teachers. And in these tough economic times, when educators are endeavoring to maintain high standards in the face of budget cuts, how encouraging it was to know that children are in the care of such dedicated people as Principal Dennis Kubala and the teachers at Ruby Thomas. In my remarks to the students, I suggested that, while good grades are important, being good people, who honor and love their parents, is even more important. They will only be returning the pride and love that I saw being showered on them.
